Our Home

"Until one has loved an animal, a part of one's soul remains unawakened."
- Anatole France

Here's to the little furry personalities that run our home and our lives. I love animals. I'm a dog person AND a cat person. I just don't think I could survive without my pets. They are the only children I'll ever want or have.

I often refer to my pets in my Journal, so I thought this page would give everyone an idea of whom I'm speaking of. Plus they totally deserve they're own page.

When Adam and I first moved into this apartment on December 29th, 2005 we had only our three cats with us. After 8 months, and once I could afford the dog food, Jenna moved in with us. That was the defining moment for me, that made this place a Home; Having a dog snoozing by my feet. ~

Calvin: You know, sometimes the world seems like a pretty mean place.
Hobbes: That's why animals are so soft and huggy.

 Loki

"God made the cat in order that man might have the pleasure of caressing the lion."

Date of Birth:

Sex:
Neutered Male

Breed:
Grey Tabby DSH

Weight:
15lbs

Favourite Toy:
Pom-poms

Loki (named after the Norse God of mischief), is quite the unique cat; from his white-tipped tail and enormous ears, to his love of dripping faucets and need to play fetch whenever someone will throw the pom-pom for him. He's extremely affectionate, and sort of the dog of the cats. When company shows up he has a tendency of being a bit of an attention whore, and pushing and rubbing all over them.

He's quite talkative, and when Adam gets home from work it's hard to have any sort of conversation without speaking loudly over Loki's constant yowling approval that Adam has come home. Loki and Skadi are brother and sister; I chose them from the same litter.

Our most recent veterinary adventure yielded mostly positive results, with the only concern being some tartar build up, that someday we'll have to have scaled off. Otherwise Loki's healthy as a horse - and gallops around the apartment like one too!

Jenna

Skadi is the little girl of the group, named after the Norse Goddess of winter and the hunt (the Snowqueen). She's somewhat shy and much more delicate than her brother, Loki, though she still has decent size to her. Her coat is the softest of the three and she has a small white spot on her chest. After the move she's become vocal and has an adorable kitten-like voice, Adam's actually taught her to make this quacking sound, but she'll only do it for him - the only exception being when she's bad and I yell at her to stop, then she sasses me by making the noise at me over her shoulder. She's our little baby, and will put up with nearly anything at all.

Although her and her big brother, Loki, enjoy cuddling up together for naps, she can get herself into some awful play fights that usually result in both of the boys pummelling her into a hissing, spitting, little mess, until one of us comes to rescue her. She's also completely and utterly in love with Jenna, my dog, and has been since she was a tiny kitten. She often places her paws on Jenn's face and gives her ears and the top of her head a very thorough washing. If she stops Jenna nudges her with her muzzle to remind her what's up.

Unfortunately our most recent trip to the vet confirmed a heart murmur that a previous vet thought he heard when she was a kitten. It's a grade 2 out of 6, and isn't much of a worry at the moment, but in a year or so I will probably have a cardio work-up done on her. For now we might just require a change in diet. Which includes absolutely no more potato chips, and that's upsetting her a great deal; she can't understand why I'm all of a sudden not sharing with her even though she's making all the most adorable sounds and faces that she knows how to make.

 Buster

"Cat said, 'I am not a friend, and I am not a Servant. I am the Cat who walks by himself, and I wish to come into your Cave.'"
- Rudyard Kipling

Date of Birth:
March 15, 1999

Sex:
Neutered Male

Breed:
Grey Tabby DSH

Weight:
10lbs

Favourite Toy:
Plastic Bags

Buster is Adam's little guy. He's very independent, intelligent, and does what he wants. He's gruff and can be mean as hell, but as much as he scars Adam's arms up when they get rough-housing, he is actually very careful of me, and has always stopped short of breaking the skin no matter how rough we're playing. This stand-off-ish little cat used to not let anyone touch him, let alone pick him up - except for Adam. Now he's been labelled a traitor as he crawls up onto the bed at night and snuggles against me like a little, warm, purring, teddy bear. I've spoiled the mean little guy and he's even starting to allow company to pet him, when before he'd just wait under the bed for them to leave.

Buster's well travelled and has seen more of the world than I have. Adam first got him in Calgary, Alberta, and he moved once within the city, and then took a plane trip across Canada to Ottawa, Ontario. From there it was another move to Owen Sound, and finally to Napanee. Buster demands the freshest water possible and hates when it's sitting still, so much so, that he will drag the dish until the water splashes around the edges a bit so he can drink moving water. One of his more odd traits is that while my two cats are afraid of noisy plastic bags, he will pull them down to the floor and gingerly lick them for long periods of time.

Our recent veterinary exam concluded that, although the oldest of the 4-leggeds in our home, Buster has no health problems whatsoever, except some mild tartar build up, but nothing to worry over right now.

Other "Friend" Dogs

Jenna is the WussWolf herself. She was nicknamed WussWolf early, by my dad, because of her own father being part wolf... and her absolute terror toward a lot of inanimate objects / her tendency toward being timid. Jenna was actually named after the girl dog in the animated film, Balto. Since the film was about a dog that was part wolf, it seemed fitting.

Jenn's very quiet (doesn't bark even when people knock at the door, but she will sing along in a wolf howl, with the police/ambulance sirens when they pass), and well behaved, and took to apartment life quickly. She's not much for tricks, or any form of obedience, but she is learning. She has very severe Dog Aggression problems, which we're working through, but she might not ever get over. There are a very few select dogs that she deems "friends" and she loves to play with them more than anything else. She definitely likes her doggy friends better than human attention.

One of her most entertaining quirks is how she eats her food; she will rapidly put her nose inside and outside of the dish, without actually touching any of the food. Eventually she'll take a few kernels out and place them on the floor, then bury them with imaginary dirt, THEN eat them. Seems a bit backwards to me.

Our trip to the vet recently gave us a bit of insight to a problem with her cracked pad on her left hind foot; there's a possible connection to the small missing patch of fur on her face, and we're awaiting confirmation on it being a zinc deficiency so we can begin to treat it.

She's a gorgeous dog and I'm extremely lucky to have her in my life. If it weren't for her I wouldn't be battling my agoraphobia as well as I am.

 Extended Family

They might not live under the same roof as our little guys (even though some of them do visit), but these guys are still family.

Sandy
Born May 14th, 1994, he's our little old man. Sandy lives with my parents, but often visits for grooming care. A total sweetheart, lost his eye a few years back, and the more recent loss of his hearing makes him very attached to Mom.
Mylo
Jenna's boyfriend! Mylo is Adam's mother's doggy, and he visits us with her. Same age and build as Jenna, and she adores him, though he seems to view her as a bit of a pain. He hates being without Nancy and can be whiney. Gorgeous doggy.
Shadow
My brother's old black lab. He's just a loving, licking, snorting, big black beast! Abandonned on the highway before Jeff got him, my brother did wonders for Shadow's travelling fears.
Titus
The new pup in the family. My brother's dog, Titus has many behavioural similarities to Jenna. He is definitely the one that will play with her the most, and not just tolerate her between "people attention."
